In response to this crisis, the European Union declared a <strong>state of climate emergency<\/strong> in November 2019, with the goal of limiting global warming to a maximum of 1.5\u00b0C. This commitment includes addressing issues such as reduced moderate rainfall and increased extreme weather events, which are affecting the availability of freshwater.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, <strong>Sustainable Development Goal 6<\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/water-and-sanitation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">United Nations<\/a>, which seeks to ensure access to clean water and sanitation, highlights the need to implement advanced wastewater purification and reclamation systems. This situation reflects not only a lack of infrastructure, but also a lack of interest or need in other regions of the continent.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Costs_and_feasibility_of_water_reclamation\"><\/span>Costs and feasibility of water reclamation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A recent study has evaluated the cost of producing reclaimed water for irrigation in the Mediterranean, taking into account European regulations on water reuse. The results show that production costs range between <strong>0.09 and 0.19 EUR\/m\u00b3<\/strong>, which positions reclaimed water as an economical and sustainable alternative to traditional sources.
